CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Lanai slowly strolled through the house from room to room, her heels clicking on the marble and hardwood floors. Her footsteps were silenced by the rooms that she’d had carpeted. It had taken her a month and a half to fill every room with love and her vision. Every room had a different feel and different look, but every room came together. This house was her first interior decorating masterpiece and she couldn’t wait to show it off at the housewarming party she had scheduled for later that night.

She had hired a crew of maids, butlers, and a caterer to handle the night. All she wanted to focus on was being the perfect hostess. She still had about two hours before the party, but she felt the need to go through every room, checking every single detail. It had cost Makai a small fortune, but he had been satisfied with the outcome and it kept her busy and out of his hair. It had also given her insight on what she wanted to do with her life, which was interior design. She’d always had a knack for style and she could make money doing what she loved.

As she strolled from her living room that she had decorated in all white, she remembered an old teacher had told her that when you did something you loved, it wasn’t working, and she’d never had the desire to work for anyone. She’d mention her idea to Makai in the morning. Right now, she had to go transform herself into the beautiful hostess that a house of this magnitude required her to be.

Before she went upstairs, she sought out the caterer and found her in the kitchen. The caterer was a small-framed Latina named Laurinda, who specialized in any cuisine anyone could think of. She’d traveled the world and had worked with many different celebrities. She even owned her own chain of restaurants, in different areas of the world. She had a crazy schedule and it was nearly impossible to get her to talk on the phone, let alone do a catering event at someone’s house. Laurinda was Lanai’s godmother; Laurinda and Vi had been good friends since they were teenagers.

Lanai called, “Ti Ti?”

Laurinda had been tasting a sauce she had cooking on the stove. She looked up from the pot, “Yes, mama?”

“I’m goin’ upstairs to get ready.”

“Ok,” Laurinda said. “Everything is ready to go here.”

Lanai kissed her godmother’s cheek and said, “You need to accept this payment Makai left for you.”

Laurinda adamantly shook her head. “You know I will not take any money from you at any time for anything. You’re my baby and anything you need, within reason, will get done. Now go. Your guests will be here soon.”

Lanai knew better than to argue with her godmother, so she turned on her heels and headed for the staircase. She climbed the stairs, went to the master suite, and opened one of the double doors. She absolutely loved every aspect of this house.
